Yodang-ri Shrine

155, Yodang-gil, Yanggam-myeon, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea

Yodang-ri Shrine is believed to have formed as a Catholicvillage (교우촌) when believers fled from Seouland the Naepo region of Chungcheong Province during the Shin-yuPersecution (1801). Because seawater once flowed into the area andcreated waterways, the village served as a strategic missionary passage linkingChungcheong Province, inland Gyeonggi-do, and Seoul.

During the persecutions of 1839 (Gihae year) and 1866(Byung-in year), many faithful gave their lives here in witness toChrist, making this a cradle of Korean Catholic faith.
