History

The Catholic Diocese of Uijeongbu oversees the northern region of Gyeonggi Province, including the cities of Uijeongbu, Dongducheon, Goyang, Guri, Namyangju, Paju, Yangju, and Yeoncheon County. It was established on June 24, 2004 by a decree of the Holy See, separated from the Archdiocese of Seoul, and is the 16th and most recently established diocese in the Catholic Church in Korea.

The first bishop, Lee Han-taek Joseph, guided the diocese for six years with the pastoral motto “A Church that goes forth, a Church that walks together.” Under his leadership, the newly founded diocese sought its direction while continuing the strengths inherited from the mother diocese, the Archdiocese of Seoul, and engaged in reflection and renewal for pastoral restructuring. The diocese chose migrant ministry and ministry for national reconciliation as its key pastoral priorities.

On May 4, 2010, Bishop Lee Ki-heon Peter was installed as the second bishop. He declared small Christian communities(소공동체) as the diocesan vision and committed the diocese to carrying out the fundamental mission of the Church through these communities.

Since then, the Diocese of Uijeongbu has developed into a community rooted in prayer and the proclamation of the Word, a community serving neighbors and society, and a community dedicated to the common good. In addition to national reconciliation and migrant ministry, the diocese continues to grow in areas such as collaborative pastoral ministry, workplace and police chaplaincy, social welfare initiatives, and cooperation with religious orders, revealing the potential of a young and dynamic diocese working to build the Kingdom of God.

On March 13, 2024, Bishop Son Hee-song Benedict, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Seoul, was appointed as the third bishop of the Diocese of Uijeongbu. Unlike the two previous bishops, Bishop Son is the first diocesan bishop to have been born within the territory of the Diocese of Uijeongbu.
