SurisanShrine is the site of a historic Catholic village formed 180years ago, where believers sought refuge from persecution.The shrine is especially associated with St. FrancisChoi Gyeong-hwan (최경환 프란치스코),whose tomb remains here. The site includes the Pilgrim Church, a reconstructedtraditional Catholic house-church, and the House of St. Mary of the Sacramentsfor retreats.

Theshrine offers a complete outdoor pilgrimage route, including the Way of theCross and an outdoor Mass area. It is suitable for a one-day walking pilgrimageor a two-day pilgrimage combined with Namyang Virgin Mary Shrine (남양성모성지)and Namhansanseong Shrine (남한산성성지)

About the Saint

St.Francis Choi Gyeong-hwan

St.Francis Choi Gyeong-hwan’s family embraced the Catholic faith from the earliest days of the Korean Church.Fleeing persecution in Seoul, they settled in Surisan and built a Catholicvillage. He entrusted his son, Choi Yang-eop,to Father Maubant (모방 신부), sending him to Macau for seminary studies.During the Gihae Persecution (1839),he buried the bodies of martyrs, encouraged fellow believers, and kept thecommunity together until he was arrested by officials from Seoul. He died inprison after severe torture, offering his life in witness to the faith at theage of 35.
