Jeondong Martyrs’ Shrine

This is the site where Korea’s first martyrs, 복자 윤지충 바오로(Blessed Paul Yun Ji-chung) and 권상연 야고보(Blessed James Kwon Sang-yeon), died during the1791 신해박해(Shin-hae Persecution) after abolishing ancestralrites and burning ancestral tablets in obedience to Church teaching. It is alsowhere 복자 유항검 아우구스티노(Blessed Augustine Yu Hang-geom), known as “theApostle of Honam,” was martyred during the 1801 신유박해(Shin-yuPersecution).

About the Saint
Blessed Paul Yun Ji-chung
When Bishop Gouvea in Beijing gave the orderforbidding ancestral rites, Paul Yun obeyed by burning the family ancestraltablets together with Blessed James Kwon. Despite repeated persuasion, theyanswered firmly: “We can never abandon the faith. Since we take the Lord as oursupreme Father, failing to follow His command would not be true worship.” Theybecame Korea’s first martyrs.
Blessed Augustine Yu Hang-geom
He was the first Catholic in the Jeolla region anda cousin of Blessed Paul Yun Ji-chung. His sons—유중철 요한(John Yu Jung-cheol) and 유문석 요한(John Yu Mun-seok)—were martyred in the Shin-yuPersecution, and the following year his daughter-in-law 이순이 루갈다(Blessed Ludgerie Yi Sun-i) was also martyred. 유중성 마태오(Matthew Yu Jung-seong), another martyr, was his nephew. Blessed Augustine Yuplayed a foundational role in establishing the Church in Honam and carried outevangelization with Father James Zhou Wen-mo. He was executed by dismembermentoutside the South Gate of Jeonju at age 45.
