Baetti Holy Site is the first gongso(mission station) in the Chungcheong region and the first seminary inJoseon. Formed as a secret Catholic community during the persecutions, it isoften called the “Catacombs of the Korean Catholic Church.” It served as thepastoral base of the Venerable Thomas Choe Yang-eop (1821–1861).

About the Saint

Venerable Thomas Choe Yang-eop

Born to St. Francis Choe Gyeong-hwan and Bl. Maria Yi Seong-rye, he became Korea’s firstseminarian and second priest. His beatification and canonization process isongoing. After his ordination in 1849, he lived on the road visiting scatteredCatholic communities. He made Baetti his pastoral center and dedicated 11 yearsand 6 months to evangelizing Joseon until his death.
