Seongnae-dong Church

Seongnae-dong Church—formerly Samcheok Church—wasfounded in 1949 and built in 1957 on a hill overlooking the city of Samcheok.It began as a faith community of local Catholic villages, eventually becoming aparish through the dedication of clergy and laypeople. Damaged during theKorean War, the church was rebuilt in the 1950s and has since served as acenter of faith for the region as the local Catholic population grew.

A unique feature of Seongnae-dong Church is thatvisitors must approach from the rear and walk around to reach the main entrancebeneath the bell tower. The bell tower faces the city rather than the entrance,allowing the church to be seen easily from afar.

About the Saint

Servant of God Father 제임스 매긴(Father James Maginn, 1911–1950)

Father James Maginn, born in the United States in1911, was sent to Korea in 1935 as a missionary of the Missionary Society ofSt. Columban. As the first pastor of Samcheok Parish, he served the poor andstrengthened the faith of the community. When the Korean War broke out, herefused attempts to persuade him to flee, saying, “To the last moment, I mustguard the church and bear witness to God.” After his capture, he enduredtorture and was pressured to renounce his faith, but he remained steadfast. Beforehis execution, he blessed a layman, Kim Su-seong, saying, “John, let us meet inheaven. Do not lose heart.”
