OnongShrine honors Paul Yoon Yu-il, SabastianJi Hwang, and Matthew Choi In-gil,the first envoys (milsa) who were martyred in the EulmyoPersecution of 1795 while attempting to bring Fr.James Zhou Wen-mo (주문모 야고보 신부) into Korea.

Theshrine also commemorates a total of 17 BlessedMartyrs, including Fr. Zhou, who died in the Shin-yuPersecution of 1801. Their beatification was celebrated by PopeFrancis on August 16, 2014.

About the Saint

BlessedPaul Yoon Yu-il

Chosen as an envoy to Bishop Gouvea in Beijing, Paul Yoon worked tirelessly tosecure the entry of a priest into Korea. The first attempt failed, but he,along with Sabastian Ji and MatthewChoi, refused to give up. Theirefforts succeeded when Fr. James Zhou Wen-mo secretlyentered Joseon. But soon after, informants reported his arrival. Paul Yoon,Sabastian Ji, and Matthew Choi were arrested and beaten to death on the sameday. PaulYoon died at age 35; Sabastian Ji at 28; Matthew Choi at 30.
