Ganghwa Goryeo Palace Site

42, Bukmun-gil, Ganghwa-eup, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon-si, Republic of Korea

A short walk up the hill behind the white buildingof Ganghwa Parish leads to the former palace site where the GoryeoDynasty resisted the Mongol invasions for 39 years. During the 1866 ByeonginPersecution, severe torture of Catholics took place in the magistrate’s office(동헌) and the 刑房 located here.

In front of this Goryeo palace site lies the JinmueongMartyrs’ Shrine (진무영 순교성지),once a coastal defense garrison during the Joseon Dynasty and also the sitewhere many Catholics were executed.

Outside the palace grounds, some claim that anexecution ground—where believers were dragged out and beheaded—once existed, although historical verification is still incomplete. The former 형방is believed to have been located behind Ganghwa Parish Church. Ganghwaremains a place where steadfast faith and historical memory stand together.
