Danggogae Martyrs’ Shrine is the site where ninesaints and one blessed gave their lives, marking the martyrdom of tenCatholic faithful around the end of the Gihae persecution in 1839.Although they were originally to be executed at Seosomun, merchants thererequested relocation of the execution ground because of the Lunar New Yearmarket season, leading officials to carry out the execution at Danggogaeinstead.

Today, Danggogae has been transformed into ahistorical park within Shingye Park, allowing even non-Catholics to experiencethe martyrs’ story. The entire shrine area is designed in the shape of a “mother’swarm embrace,”expressing not the martyrs’ suffering but thematernal love with which, from heaven, they now protect the faithful.
