Churchof Repentance and Atonement

The Church of Repentance and Atonement and theCenter for National Reconciliation were built at the suggestion of CardinalStephen Kim Sou-hwan to pray for peace and unity on the Korean peninsula. Thechurch was completed in 2008, and the center in 2014.

The exterior reproduces the historic Jinsadong Church of Sinuiju, while theinterior reflects the style of the Benedictine Monastery of Tokwon. Thereconciliation center reconstructs the former Maryknoll mission headquarters inSeopo, Pyongyang.

A glass mosaic above the altar depicts North and South Korean martyrs prayingfor peace and unity. Behind the sanctuary, the coats of arms and portraits ofBishop Hong Yong-ho and Abbot Sim Sang-won are rendered in mosaic.

On June 25, 2018, Bishop Peter Lee Ki-heon designated this church as acommemorative pilgrimage site for the martyrs of North Korea, establishing itas a symbolic place of prayer for peace and reconciliation.
