Yeosan Shrine is the site of martyrdom during the1868 무진박해(Mu-jin Persecution). At least 23 martyrs arerecorded by name, and many more who remain unknown also gave their lives here.The title “Gate of Heaven” expresses the belief that the martyrs, persecutedfor righteousness, entered heaven through their suffering.

Around the church are three nearby martyrdom sites:여산 숲정이(Yeosan Supjeongi), where martyrs were beheaded (“martyrdom of fire”); 여산 배다리(Yeosan Baedari), where some were drowned (“martyrdom of water”); and 여산 백지사터(Yeosan Baekjisa Site), where others were suffocated by the baekjisamethod (“martyrdom of wind”).

Through reservation, groups can arrange Mass,retreats, and meals for pilgrims. The relics of the martyrs who died here areenshrined at the nearby Cheonho Shrine.
