Thetomb of Saint Nam Jong-sam John (성 남종삼 요한) was established in 1968 by his grandson NamSang-cheol. It includes the graves of the saint, his martyred father NamSang-gyo (남상교), his wife Yi Jo-i (이조이), and hisyoungest son Nam Gyu-hee (남규희), who died in exile. The tomb of his eldestmartyred son Nam Myeong-hee (남명희) is not present. Saint Nam Jong-sam, thehighest-ranking official among the 103 Korean martyrs, resigned from hisgovernment post because it hindered his faith.

About the Saint

SaintNam Jong-sam John

Born in Chungju, he passed the civil service exam in 1843 and later served asRoyal Secretary (승지). During Daewongun’s rule, the ByeonginPersecution began; Nam Jong-sam was arrested, endured six interrogations,refused to renounce his faith, and was executed at Seosomun (서소문).He was 50 years old.
