Jeonju Supjeongi Shrine

Thiswooded area, called “Supjeongi” or “Supmeori,” was historically the site of themilitary command post of Jeonju Fortress. During the 신유박해(Shin-yu), 기해박해(Gi-hae), and 병인박해(Byung-inPersecution), it served as the execution ground for Catholics. Beginning withthe martyrdom of four members of the Yu Hang-geom family during the Shin-yuPersecution, the blood of martyrs never ceased to be shed here. From thissingle site came six saints and twelve blesseds of the Diocese of Jeonju.

About the Saint

Blessed Ludgerie Yi Sun-i

Ludgeriedevoted herself entirely to the Eucharist and to a life of virtue, resolvingfirmly to remain a virgin. In Joseon society, however, it was extremelydifficult for a woman to live unmarried. Her mother respected her choice, andthrough the assistance of Father James Zhou Wen-mo, she married 유중철 요한(John Yu Jung-cheol). She moved with him to his hometown of Chonami in Jeonju,where they made vows of chastity before his parents and lived thereafter asbrother and sister. Whenever her husband struggled with this vow, she helpedhim persevere through prayer and meditation. She was martyred by beheading atage 20
