About the Saint

St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon

Afterbeing ordained in China, St. Andrew Kim set out for Joseon with Bishop Ferréol,Father Daveluy, and eleven lay faithful on a small boat they named Raphael. At first, the boat was towed by a Chinese vessel heading toward Liaodong andsafely reached Shandong, but soon encountered fierce storms that broke therudder and tore the sail. Left to the mercy of the waves, they drifted untilthey reached the coast of Jeju Island. Fromthere, they sailed into the Geumgang River, between Jeolla and Chungcheongprovinces, and finally landed at Nabawi. Disguised with a bamboo hat and a longovercoat, St. Andrew Kim stepped onto Korean soil under the cover ofnight—forty-two days after departing from Shanghai.
