Mawon Shrine

MawonShrine is a Catholic village formed by believers from Chungcheong-do who soughtrefuge in the Mungyeong mountains after the Shin-yuPersecution (1801).

The shrine enshrines the relics of Servant of God and MartyrMatthew Park Sang-geun (박상근 마티아), whowelcomed French missionary Fr. Félix Clément Calais,a member of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, and supported pastoral ministryin the region.

Apilgrimage route has been established from Mawon Shrine through the HindaemiCatholic Village on Mt. Baekhwa up to the Hansil Catholic Village beyond theridge—following the very mountain paths that Martyr Park Sang-geun and Fr.Calais crossed while fleeing persecution.

About the Saint

Servantof God, Martyr Matthew Park Sang-geun

After the Shin-yu Persecution (1801), many Catholics from Chungcheong-do tookrefuge in the rugged mountains of the Mungyeong region, forming small hiddencommunities. Park Sang-geun, then a low-ranking local official, encounteredthese believers and accepted the faith.Fr. Calais, who arrived in Korea in 1861, carried out missionary work in thewestern Gyeongsang region. Park Sang-geun assisted him and helped him hide in1866, but was captured and taken to Sangju.He was martyred on December 21, 1866, at the age of 31.
