During the persecutions, the mountain region ofYeonpung became a passage for believers escaping over the Mungyeong Saejae Passand Ihwaryeong toward Gyeongsang Province. Arriving in Yeonpung, they couldbriefly rest before continuing their flight, praying whenever possible even asthey crossed the passes.

Fr. Thomas Choe Yang-eop and Frenchmissionary Fr. Calais (Nicolas-Garin) alsotraveled through Yeonpung as they moved between Gyeongsang and Chungcheong, secretly administering the sacraments to the hidden Christian communities inthe valleys. Over time, Yeonpung became a crossroads between the two provincesand a refuge for the faithful.

During the 1866 Byeongin Persecution, many Catholics were arrested here andattained the glory of martyrdom.
