Jinmokjeong Shrine & Sannae Church

192 Suui-gil, Sannae-myeon, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongbuk(경북 경주시 산내면 수의길192)

Formedas a Catholic village during the early persecutions of the 1800s, this site wasvisited by missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society and served as arefuge for believers during the Byeongin Persecution, many of whom hid innearby caves. Today, the shrine preserves these caves, martyr tombs, a chapel,memorial church, ossuary, and lodging facilities for pilgrims.

About the Saint

Bl.Peter Yi Yang-deung

PeterYi Yang-deung served as village leader in the Catholic community of Ulsan.Known for his gentle character, he lived faithfully while supporting himselfthrough trade. During the 1866 persecutions, he fled toward Jungnyeong andencountered Bl. James Heo In-baek and Bl. Luke Kim Jong-ryun. Even while beingdragged away under arrest, the three resolved to embrace martyrdom. Aftertorture in Gyeongju and Ulsan, Yi Yang-deung continued to confess his faith andwas eventually beheaded, dying while invoking the names of Jesus and Mary.
