HaemiInternational Shrine is the resting place of countless unnamed martyrs who diedfor the faith. While the names of 132 martyrs are known, most remainunidentified. On August 16, 2014, during his visit to Korea, Pope Francisbeatified three Haemi martyrs: Blessed In Eon-min Martin, BlessedYi Bo-hyeon Francis, and Blessed Kim Jin-hu Pius.

About the Saint

BlessedIn Eon-min Martin (์ธ์–ธ๋ฏผ ๋งˆ๋ฅดํ‹ฐ๋…ธ, 1737โ€“1800)

Beforethe Shin-yu Persecution of 1801, In Eon-min (Martin) and Yi Bo-hyeon (Francis)were martyred in Haemi. Before the Gi-hae Persecution (1839), Kim Jin-hu (Pius)died in prison in 1814, along with five other martyrs. After the Byung-inPersecution of 1866, 122 additional martyrs died here. Intotal, 132 known martyrs are associated with Haemi. When including at least 47unnamed martyrs, the number exceeds 179 martyrs.Among them, 33 were hanged, 5 were beheaded, 5 died in prison, 4 died ofillness, 3 were buried alive, 3 died under torture, and 14 died by unknowncauses. Haemiis the only place in Korea where the site of live burial and the remains of themartyrs have been historically confirmed and preserved, giving this shrineprofound significance in the story of faith in Korea.
