Wondong Church is the cathedral church of theDiocese of Wonju. Formerly known as Wonju Church, it was established in 1896 asthe second parish in Gangwon-do after Pungsuwon Church. The originalGothic-style church built in 1913 was destroyed during the Korean War, and thepresent church was rebuilt in 1954. With its simple rectangular brick structureand central dome bell tower, it is designated Registered Cultural Heritage No.139 of the Republic of Korea.

In 1971, the church hosted a “Special Mass andRally for the Elimination of Corruption,” praying for justice and righteousnessin society. In 1976, during the Yushin regime, the church issued the “WonjuDeclaration,” a landmark moment in Korea’s democratization movement. Thisdeclaration later inspired the March 1st Democracy and National SalvationDeclaration proclaimed at Myeongdong Cathedral the same year.

About the Saint

Blessed 최 비르지타(Brigitta Choe, 1783–1839)

Blessed Brigitta Choe was arrested during the GihaePersecution of 1839 when she visited her nephew, John Choe Hae-seong, inprison. When officials demanded that she renounce her faith, she firmlyreplied, “Even if I never see my son again and die here, I cannot betray God.”She endured torture and four months of imprisonment before being strangled todeath on December 8, 1839. A jailer’s mother testified that at the moment ofher martyrdom, a light rose from her body, saying, “She has gone to heaven.”
