[4] Two Pioneers of Early Evangelization in Korea
1.Yu Hang-geom Augustine, Apostle of the Honam Region
Yu Hang-geom Augustine, known as the Apostle of Honam, was a cousin of Yun Ji-chung. He learned the faith from Kwon Il-shin, one of the founders of the Church, and became a cornerstone of evangelization in the Honam region.
He carried out missionary work with Father Zhou Wen mo. He was condemned under charges of high treason and immorality against the state and was executed by dismemberment, a sentence that included the destruction of his home and its replacement with a pond.
His wife Shin Hui, his eldest son Yu Jung-cheol, his daughter-in-law Yi Sun-i, his second son Yu Mun-seok, and his brother Yu Gwan-geom were all executed. His three youngest children were exiled; nine-year-old Yu Seom-i was sent as a government servant to Geoje, while the fate of the others is unknown.
2. Yi Jon-chang Ludovico, Apostle of the Chungcheong Region
Yi Jon-chang Ludovico received his missionary mission in his home region of Chungcheong. He learned the faith from Kwon Il-shin, one of the founding pioneers of the Church, and welcomed Father Zhou Wen mo into the region.
The family of St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon, the first Korean priest, was evangelized through Yi Jon-chang’s mission. It is said that nearly all Korean Catholics today are descendants of those he converted, a testimony to the immense impact of his evangelization.
St. Andrew Kim’s grandmother was Yi Jon-chang’s niece, and Father Thomas Choe Yang-eop was the grandson of Yi’s nephew.
Yi Jon-chang was sentenced to death alongside Jeong Yak-jong Augustine. He was taken to Gongju and was beheaded the next day, giving his life in martyrdom.
