Jukrim-dong Martyrs’ Shrine

죽림동 주교좌 성당(Jukrim-dong Cathedral), which began as the 곰실 본당(GomsilParish) in 1920, became the center of the Diocese of Chuncheon. The stonechurch was begun in 1949 and consecrated in 1956. Although damaged during theKorean War, it was restored and later designated as a Registered CulturalHeritage site. In 1998, Bishop 장익(Bishop John Chang Ik) renovated the interiorwhile preserving the exterior, and in 2013 the Way of the Cross was added aspart of a sanctuary development project. Declared a shrine on September 17,2017, Jukrim-dong Martyrs’ Shrine holds the remains and symbolic tombs ofpriests martyred during the war, including seven Servants of God in thebeatification and canonization process. The clergy cemetery also includesBishop 토마스 퀸란(Bishop Thomas Quinlan) and Bishop 장익(Bishop John Chang Ik).

About the Saint

Servantof God Father 프랜시스 캐너밴(Father Francis Canavan,1915–1950)

Bornin Ireland in 1915, Father Canavan was ordained in 1940 and sent to Korea in1948. During the Korean War, he served in Jukrim-dong Church as assistant toMonsignor Quinlan. Captured by North Korean forces, he endured the “deathmarch” through 평양(Pyongyang) and 만포(Manpo).Suffering from pneumonia, he died in 하창리(Hachang-ri) on December 6, 1950, saying, “I willhave Christmas dinner in heaven.” He was 35 years old.
