MirinaeShrine takes its name from the sight of lantern lights glowing from Catholichomes in the mountains during the Shin-yu (1801) andGi-hae (1839) Persecutions—lights that resembled the Milky Way(“Mirinae”) shining in the night.

Hererest the remains of St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon, his mother UrsulaKo, Bishop Jean Ferréol, Fr.Kang Do-young Marco (the third Korean priest and first pastor ofMirinae), and Vincent Lee Min-sik, who broughtSt. Andrew Kim’s body from Saenamteo and offered his family land to the Church.

In1976, the Diocese of Suwon relocated the relics of many unnamed martyrs fromthe region to this site, enabling pilgrims to witness the full span of Korea’smartyrdom history from persecution to the present.

Withinthe shrine grounds are:

• The Memorial Church of St. AndrewKim Dae-geon

• The Church commemorating the Canonizationof the 103 Martyrs

St. Joseph’s Church of Mirinae,which houses a relic of St. Andrew Kim

• The tomb of BishopFerréol, fulfilling his wish to “rest beside a holymartyr.”

About the Saint

St.Andrew Kim Dae-geon (성 김대건 안드레아, 1821–1846)

Born in Solmoe, Chungcheong-do to Ignatius Kim Je-jun andUrsula Ko, Andrew Kim was chosen in 1836 by Fr.Pierre Maubant to study for the priesthood in Macau. After sixyears of formation, he was ordained on August 17, 1845, by BishopJean Ferréol, becoming the first Korean-born priest. Hereturned to Korea to begin pastoral ministry in Seoul and the Yongin region. OnSeptember 16, 1846, he was martyred at Saenamteo,giving his life for the faith at the age of 26.
