First Saturday Mass in honor of Our Lady is celebrated monthly.

Yanggeun Shrine is the birthplace of KwonCheol-sin Ambrosio and Kwon Il-sin,two key figures of early Korean Catholicism and leaders of the study gatheringsat Cheonjinam, where the foundations of the Korean Church werelaid. This sacred ground is one of the earliest centers where a Catholiccommunity formed, from which the faith spread across the country. Manybelievers were executed here simply for professing faith in God, their bodiesabandoned after martyrdom.

From Yanggeun, the Catholic faith spread towardChungcheong-do and Jeolla-do. During the early years, lay leaders—acting inplace of priests—celebrated Mass and Confirmation for nearly two years, makingYanggeun the true cradle of the Korean Catholic Church.

About the Saint

Servant of God Kwon Cheol-sinAmbrosio (하느님의 종 권철신 암브로시오, 1736–1801)

A renowned scholar of his time, he taught many who later became pillars of theKorean Church, including St. John the Baptist Yi Byeok, BlessedLuke Hong Nak-min, Blessed Paul Yun Yu-il, St.Peter Yi Seung-hun, and St. Ludovico Gonzaga YiJon-chang. In 1795, when Fr. JamesZhou Wen-mo, a Chinese priest, visited his home, Ambrosioreceived the sacraments together with his adopted son, KwonSang-mun. At the outbreak of the Shin-yuPersecution (1801), he was arrested as a leader of the Church. Takento the State Tribunal, he refused to reveal any information about Fr. Zhou orthe faithful, remaining steadfast through interrogation and torture until hismartyrdom at the age of 65.

Blessed Peter Jo Suk (복자 조숙 베드로,1786–1819),Blessed Teresa Kwon Cheon-nye (복자 권천례 데레사, 1783–1819),Servant of God Barbara Go Dong-i (하느님의 종 고동이 바르바라, 1761–1819)

Peter Jo was born into a noble family and embracedthe faith in childhood. During the Shin-yu Persecution,he and his parents fled to relatives in Gangwon-do. At age 17, he married TeresaKwon Cheon-nye, who gave him a letter on their wedding nightasking that they live as a chaste couple. Moved by grace, Peter agreed, andtogether they lived as brother and sister, devoting themselves entirely to God. The widow Barbara GoDong-i lived with them and assisted them in theirspiritual life. When persecution intensified, soldiers raided theirhome and arrested Peter. Teresa voluntarily followed her husband, and Barbarajoined them in prison. Despite repeated interrogations and torture, all threeremained unshakable in their faith. After two years of imprisonment, they werefinally granted the crown of martyrdom and were executed together.
