Duringthe Gihae persecution, seeing many believers arrested and executed, thethirteen-year-old Yu Dae-cheol voluntarily presented himself to theauthorities, resolved to die for his faith. He endured tortures far beyond whata child could bear. When executioners tore flesh from his thigh and demanded,“Will you still believe in this religion?” he answered, “Of course I will. Didyou think this would make me abandon God?” Whenthey heated a lump of charcoal to force into his mouth, he opened wide andsaid, “Go ahead,” startling his torturers. Despite his wounded body, heremained serene and joyful. Realizing they could not break his faith, theguards secretly strangled him to death. He is the youngest ofthe 103 canonized Korean martyrs.
