In1866, when a French fleet approached the outskirts of Seoul, Daewongun vowed to“wash the Han River, defiled by Western barbarians, with the blood ofCatholics.” Thus began the brutal executions known as the ByeonginPersecution, during which countless believers were beheaded atthis site. From then on, the hill became known as Jeoldusan, meaning “Beheading Hill.”

Tocommemorate the 100th anniversary of the Byeongin persecution, the KoreanCatholic Church built the Jeoldusan Memorial Hall, which today includes achurch, a relic chapel, and a museum. Housing more than 3,500artifacts, including martyr relics, documents, andinstruments of torture, it stands as one of the most significant museumsrepresenting the Korean Catholic tradition. The outdoor sculptures andmonuments harmonize beautifully with the surrounding landscape.
