Songol Shrine

용인시 수지구 동천로437번길67 (동천동)

Songol Shrine was once a small Catholicvillage (교우촌) where believers lived in hidingduring the persecutions. The name Songol means“the fragrant valley,” inspired by its abundance of wild grasses and orchids. It is also a historic mission site of the Paris ForeignMissions Society (파리외방전교회).

This shrine commemorates St.Henri Dorie (도리 헨리코) and St.Peter Aumaître (오매트르 베드로), Frenchmissionaries who were martyred during the Byung-inPersecution (병인박해, 1866).

The villagers of Songol supported the missionaries by helping them adapt to theKorean language and culture, providing shelter, and assisting their pastoralwork despite their own difficult lives, often sustained by tobacco farming.
