Yongsu Shrine commemorates the landing of 성 김대건 안드레아 신부(St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon), the first Korean Catholic priest, on Jeju Island.After being ordained in Shanghai, he departed on August 31 aboard a small boatnamed Raphael. On thejourney toward Joseon, the boat was caught in violent storms, and afterdrifting for 28 days, it reached the shores of Yongsu-ri.

This shrine marks both the historic landing and thefirst celebration of Mass and the Eucharist on Jeju by the first Korean priest.Inside the exhibition hall, visitors can see recreated scenes of his arrivaland his celebration of Mass. On the eastern side of the memorial, a restoredversion of the Raphael is displayed.

About the Saint

St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon

After his ordination in China, St. Andrew Kim setout for Joseon with Bishop Ferréol, Father Daveluy, and eleven lay faithful onthe small vessel they named Raphael. Afterinitially traveling safely toward Shandong, the ship was struck by violentwinds—its rudder broken and its sails torn. Drifting helplessly, it finallyreached Jeju Island. From there, the group entered the Geumgang River betweenJeolla and Chungcheong provinces and eventually landed at Nabawi. Disguised ina bamboo hat and a long coat, St. Andrew Kim stepped onto Korean soil forty-twodays after leaving Shanghai.
