Sinam-ri Church

Sinam-riis the birthplace and childhood home of the Servant of God Fr. Yi Chun-geunLawrence (이춘근 라우렌시오). Ordained for the Archdiocese of Seoul, he laterentered the Benedictine Order and is believed to have been martyred inPyongyang in 1950. Formed as a faith community during the late Joseonpersecutions, the village became a mission station in 1907 under Songdo Parish,later belonging to several parishes until it was elevated to parish statusagain in 2008.

Completely destroyed during the Korean War, the church was rebuilt between 1953and 1955 through the efforts of parishioners and British soldiers. In 2007, anew church was dedicated to mark the 100th anniversary of the mission station.Sinam-ri stands as a historically significant community of enduring faith andremains one of the key sacred sites of the Diocese of Uijeongbu.

About the Saint

Servantof God Yi Chun-geun Lawrence

Born on March 8, 1915, in a devout Catholic family in Sinam-ri, he was ordainedin 1939 at Myeongdong Cathedral. In 1941 he entered the Benedictine monasteryat Deokwon, professed final vows in 1945, and served as seminary professor,prefect, and spiritual director for the Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Helpwhile ministering in the Pyongyang Diocese.During the communist arrests of clergy in 1950, he was taken away with otherpriests. Testimony from fellow clergy and faithful indicates that he wasmartyred on October 5, 1950, during the North Korean retreat from Pyongyang.His life remains a profound witness of faith, pastoral dedication, andmartyrdom in the history of the Korean Catholic Church.
