Chonamiis the site of the birthplace of 복자 유항검 아우구스티노(Blessed Augustine YuHang-geom), the “Apostle of Honam.” During the 1801 신유박해(Shin-yu Persecution), he was arrested and executed by dismemberment, and hishome was subjected to paga-jotaek, apunishment in which a house is destroyed and replaced with a pond. His entirefamily suffered execution by association in Jeonju.

Thenearby Catechetical House he operated was a place not only for catechesis butalso for Mass and the celebration of the sacraments. This is also where 유중철 요한(Blessed John Yu Jung-cheol) and 이순이 루갈다(Blessed Ludgerie Yi Sun-i) lived their chastemarried life for four years before their arrest.

About the Saint

Blessed Augustine Yu Hang-geom

Afterreceiving Baptism, he worked closely with Blessed Paul Yun Ji-chung, Korea’sfirst martyr, in spreading the Gospel throughout the Jeolla region. He sharedthe faith not only with family and relatives but also with the servants in hishousehold. Duringthe Shin-yu Persecution, he was the first in Jeolla Province to be arrested. Heendured brutal torture and was executed by dismemberment in Jeonju at age 46,and his home was destroyed under the paga-jotaek punishment.
