Galgok-ri Church

Galgok-ri (갈곡리, also called Chilul 칠울) wasestablished in 1896 by three Catholic families who fled persecution inPungsuwon and settled in nearby Ugol. The village became a deeply rootedCatholic community, the birthplace of the Servant of God Fr. Kim Chi-hoBenedict (김치호 베네딕도) and Sr. Kim Jeong-suk Marianna (김정숙 마리안나),producing many priests and religious. Sacramental records date back to 1898,and Bishop Mutel visited in 1908. The 1936 prayer hall was destroyed during thewar, and the current church was built in 1955 with help from a U.S. Marinechaplain. It became a parish in 2018, and the old hall was restored in 2008.

About the Saint
Servant of God Fr. Kim Chi-hoBenedict
Born in Seoul in 1914, he entered the Benedictine monastery in 1926. Ordainedin 1942, he served at Deokwon Parish, known for his skill in music, literature,and German. Arrested by North Korean authorities in 1949, he was sent toPyongyang Correctional Center and martyred in 1950. He is remembered as thefirst Korean clerical religious.
