OryundaeMartyrs’ Shrine

This shrine contains the graves of **eight martyrs of Busan** and the relics of**twenty-six of the 103 Korean Martyr Saints**. In Busan, following the 1866Byung-in Persecution, eight Catholics—including **Blessed John Yi Jeong-sik**,his family, and his godson **Blessed Martin Yang Jae-hyeon**—who had beenimprisoned in Dongnae were executed by military beheading on September 20, 1868at Suyeong Jangdae.

 

The graves of John Yi Jeong-sik and his family were later discovered andtransferred to Oryundae, where the site was developed into the **Busan Martyrs’Cemetery**.

About the Saint

BlessedMartin Yang Jae-hyeon

YangJae-hyeon came to know the Catholic faith through his meeting with John YiJeong-sik and later received instruction and was baptized. During the 1868persecution, he was arrested by soldiers of the Dongnae region after theylearned he was a Catholic. He calmly welcomed the officers who came to his homeand was taken to the magistrate’s office. Heopenly professed his Catholic faith and accepted the punishments inflicted onhim. When pressured to apostatize, he firmly declared, “I can never abandon theCatholic faith,” remaining unwavering until the end.
