Foundedin 1896, Myeongnye Church is the first church in the Gyeongnam region. Thepresent church was reconstructed in 1938 using the remains of the churchdestroyed by a typhoon in 1936. Its wooden interior, where men’s and women’sseating areas are separated, reflects the architectural style of Korea’s earlyCatholic churches. In May 2018, through the sacrifices of benefactors andpilgrims nationwide, the “Shin Seok-bok Mark Church” was dedicated, and themartyrs were enshrined in the Martyrs’ Tower.

About the Saint
BlessedMark Shin Seok-bok
BlessedMark Shin was captured during the Byung-in Persecution of 1866. Although hisbrothers attempted to bribe the officers for his release, he firmly refused,saying, “Do not give a single coin to free me.” He endured harsh interrogationsand was pressured to renounce his faith, yet he responded, “Even if you set mefree, I will practice the Catholic faith again.” Imprisoned and later executedby hanging, he died a martyr at the age of thirty-nine.
