Yeoumok was a Catholic village formed through thefaith of St. John Yi Yun-il (์ด์œค์ผ ์š”ํ•œ) andthe household of Joseph Seo Chi-bo (์„œ์น˜๋ณด ์š”์…‰).

In October 1866, during the Byung-in Persecution, government officers fromMungyeong raided the village and arrested more than thirty Catholics, includingvillage leader Yi Yun-il, taking them to the Mungyeong magistrateโ€™s office.

St. John Yi Yun-il was later beheaded at the execution ground inGwan-deokjeong, Daegu.

About the Saint

St. John Yi Yun-il

A devout Catholic from Hongju in Chungcheong-do, he lived in Yeoumokgol inMungyeong, serving as village leader. He was arrested with his family and morethan thirty fellow believers in November 1866.He received the death sentence in Daegu and awaited martyrdom in peace andprayer.On January 21, 1867, he was executed by beheading outside Daegu Nammun atGwan-deokjeong at the age of 45.
