Gwan-deokjeong Martyrs Memorial Hall

This memorial hall, established by the archdiocese,houses the relics of Saint John Yi Yun-il, the secondary patron saint of theArchdiocese of Daegu. The site is where many early Catholics were executedduring the persecutions. The building contains a three-story exhibition hallpresenting the history of Catholic communities in the Gyeongsang region, alongwith a chapel where Mass can be celebrated upon reservation. A guided alleytour from the memorial hall to the nearby Marian shrine is also available.

About the Saint

Saint Yi Yun-il John

Born in Chungcheong Province, Yi Yun-il served as alay leader in Mungyeong, Gyeongsang Province. During the Byeongin Persecutionof 1866, he was arrested with his family and fellow believers. Despite brutaltorture and repeated demands to renounce the faith, he continued to profess hisbelief. He was later transferred to Daegu, sentenced to death, and martyred in1867 at Gwan-deokjeong at the age of 45. He is now venerated as the secondarypatron saint of the Archdiocese of Daegu.
