Designated Historic Site No. 529, Solmoe Shrinetakes its name from the pure Korean word meaning “a hill covered with pinetrees.” It is the birthplace of St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon,the first priest of Korea. Solmoe was home to four generations of martyrs: KimJin-hu (great-grandfather), Kim Jong-han (great-uncle), Kim Je-jun (father),and St. Andrew Kim himself.

About the Saint

St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon (성 김대건 안드레아,1821–1846)

Solmoe, the birthplace of Father Kim Dae-geonAndrea, is the site where Korea’s first priest began his life. He was ordainedin Shanghai by Bishop Jean Joseph Ferréol. Returning to Korea in 1845, hedevoted himself to assisting foreign missionaries entering the country. OnSeptember 16, 1846, he was executed by beheading at Saenamteo, giving his lifein witness to the faith.
