PungsuwonChurch is a community of faith formed by believers who fled during the Shin-yuPersecution of 1802 and continued practicing the faith for eighty years withouta resident priest. It was established as a parish in 1888 with Father Lemaireas the first pastor. In 1896, Father 정규하 아우구스티노(Father Augustine JeongGyu-ha), the third Korean priest, began his forty-seven years of ministry here.In 1907, together with the faithful, he built the brick church in GothicRomanesque style.

Thechurch is a Eucharistic shrine where the annual Eucharistic Congress is held.As the first church in Gangwon-do and the seventh Western-style church built inKorea, Pungsuwon Church holds great historical and architectural significance.
