Built in 1984 to reflect upon the pain of division and to renew the longing for reunification, this site offers a view where the reality of division unfolds beneath one’s eyes. Since its establishment, hundreds of thousands of displaced persons and visitors have come to soothe the wounds of separation and to pray for reunification. It is located on a hill at an elevation of 70 meters in Myeongho-ri, Hyeonnae-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, at the northernmost part of the East Sea coast. Mount Geumgang lies approximately 16 kilometers away at its closest point and about 25 kilometers at its farthest, allowing most of the Haegeumgang area to be seen at a glance, along with surrounding islands and scenic rock formations such as Manmulsang, Hyeonjongam, Sagongam, and Buddha Rock.
