Built in 1984 to reflect upon the pain of division and to renew the longing for reunification, this site offers a view where the reality of division unfolds beneath one’s eyes. Since its establishment, hundreds of thousands of displaced persons and visitors have come to soothe the wounds of separation and to pray for reunification. It is located on a hill at an elevation of 70 meters in Myeongho-ri, Hyeonnae-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (강원특별자치도 고성군 현내면 명호리), at the northernmost part of the East Sea coast. Mount Geumgang (금강산) lies approximately 16 kilometers away at its closest point and about 25 kilometers at its farthest, allowing most of the Haegeumgang area (해금강) to be seen at a glance, along with surrounding islands and scenic rock formations such as Manmulsang (사자바위), Hyeonjongam (현종암), Sagongam (사공암), and Buddha Rock (부처바위).
