The Seungni Observatory (승리전망대), located in Geunnam-myeon, Cheorwon-gun (철원군 근남면), is situated at the exact center of the Armistice Line. It opened in 2002. This observatory stands at an elevation of 495 meters, in the very heart of a militarily strategic area, and is currently the closest point within the DMZ to North Korea’s armistice monitoring post. From here, visitors can view movements of North Korean forces, as well as the Gyeongwon Railway Line (경원선철도), the Gwangsam Plain (광삼평야), and the village of Achim-ri (아침리), taking in at a glance the on-site reality of the division between North and South Korea.
