Geoje Prisoner of War Camp

Geoje Prisoner of War Camp

1849 Geoje Jungang-ro, Geoje-si, Gyeongsangnam-do

This site was established in 1951 to accommodate prisoners of war who came down from the North during the Korean War, and it is now operated as a history park focused on education and exhibitions, preserving the history and traces of that time. It is the only war prisoner camp heritage site in Korea that realistically presents the urgent situations of the time, including issues of prisoner management, ideological conflicts, and riot incidents that occurred amid the tragedy of war.

During the war, the Geoje Prisoner of War Camp (거제 포로수용소) held more than 170,000 prisoners at its peak, and ideological clashes and riots occurred among prisoners as they lived in a limited space. As a result, the camp became a historical site symbolizing another battlefield of the Korean War, going beyond a simple “prisoner of war management facility,” and invites reflection on how war affects individual lives and human dignity.
