Juksan Shrine
Juksan Shrine is a place of profound martyrdomwhere countless Korean Catholics offered their lives during the Byung-inPersecution of 1866. According to the CheemyeongIlgi (Record of Martyrdom) and surviving testimonies, atleast 24 martyrs are known byname, while many more—whose names remain unrecorded—were dragged to theexecution ground at Juksan and put to death for their faith.
Among the Catholic holy places in Korea, only a fewwere actual execution sites, and Juksanis one of these rare locations. It is also the onlymartyrdom site where victims were beaten nearly to death and thenexecuted—testifying to the extreme brutality endured by the faithful who choseto witness to God until their final breath.
