GusanShrine stands in Gusan Village, named for the mountain behind it said toresemble a turtle. It is a sacred ground where St. AnthonyKim Seong-u and nine other martyrs are buried. Around 1830, St.Kim Seong-u and his brothers Deok-sim and Yun-sim received baptism from FatherYu Bang-je. As community leaders, they brought relatives and neighbors into thefaith, forming a Catholic village.

GusanShrine bears witness to a family whose faith took root, grew through threegenerations, and culminated in martyrdom—an enduring example of a family livingand dying in fidelity to Christ.

About the Saint

St.Anthony Kim Seong-u (성 김성우 안토니오, 1795–1841)

He welcomed Father Maubant, who arrived in 1836, into his home and protectedthe local Church community amid persecution, even relocating multiple times forsafety. Arrested during the Gi-hae Persecution (1839) andtaken to the Seoul Police Tribunal, he endured severe interrogation andtorture. With steadfast courage, he declared, “I am aCatholic. In life I will live as a Catholic, and in death I will die as aCatholic.” He was martyred at the age of 48.
