Hill of the Ten Thousand Martyrs

107, Bigogae-ro 741beon-gil, Naega-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon Metropolitan City, Republic of Korea

TheHill of the Ten Thousand Martyrs was foundedin June 2002 by the 2nd Bishop of Incheon, Bishop Boniface Choi Ki-san, tohonor the Korean martyrs symbolically represented by the number tenthousand. Historians estimate that only about 2,000 martyrsare known by name today—meaning the overwhelming majority of Korean martyrsremain anonymous. Most were poor, uneducated, and marginalized, yet they borewitness to their faith at the cost of their lives.

Forthis reason, from its foundation, the site has intentionally honored unnamedmartyrs through the Path of the Unknown Martyrs, the Statue of the Unknown Martyrs, and buildings such as the Mumyeong-gwan(“House ofthe Unknown”). Behind the church stands a memorial hall dedicated to Saint JohnNam Chong-sam.
