DaejeongShrine is the burial place of 정난주 마리아(Maria Jeong Nan-ju), the wife of 황사영 알렉시오(Alexis Hwang Sa-yeong). Although she did not die a martyr’s death, her entirelife reflected the spirit of martyrdom.

Duringthe 1801 신유박해(Shin-yu Persecution), her husband Hwang Sa-yeongwrote a letter in a cave at Baeron, addressed to Bishop Gouvea in Beijing,describing the brutal persecutions in Korea and appealing for help. The letterwas discovered before being sent, and Hwang was executed. His family was exiledto Chuja Island and Jeju.

JeongNan-ju suffered the anguish of parting from her two-year-old son, Gyunghan, whowas left behind on Chuja Island. She lived as a slave on Jeju for 37 years anddied at the age of 66.
