About the Saint

Blessed Felix Peter KimGiryang

Blessed Kim Giryang was a small-scale trader fromHamdeok-ri. While sailing near Jeju, he encountered a storm, drifted at sea,and was rescued by a British ship that eventually brought him to the ParisForeign Missions Society in Hong Kong. There he learned the faith and becamethe first Jeju-born Catholic to be baptized. He returned to Jeju and tirelessly preached theGospel, traveling between the island and the mainland—earning the title“Apostle of Jeju.” After the 1866 병인박해(Byung-in Persecution), he wasarrested and taken to Tongyeong. There he was brutally tortured and finallyhanged at the age of 51. Records say that authorities drove an iron spike intohis chest to ensure he would never rise again.
