Uijeongbu Cathedral
UijeongbuCathedral has served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Uijeongbu since thediocese was established in 2004. With origins tracing back to Sinam-ri Church(founded 1925) and Deokjeong-ri Church (1937), the parish relocated to itscurrent site in 1945.
Known as the “mother parish” of northern Gyeonggi Province, it gave rise tomany neighboring parishes and contributed greatly to the region throughfounding the first Legion of Mary praesidium in the Seoul Archdiocese (1957),as well as supporting the establishment of Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital, localcooperatives, and educational institutions.
At the entrance stands the historic former church building, constructed in 1953with assistance from a U.S. military chaplain during the Korean War. It isdesignated Gyeonggi Cultural Property No. 99 and preserves the typical postwarchurch architectural style, including a vertical bell tower and classicalfaçade.
In August 2003, a new church was completed and dedicated. Together with the oldchurch, it remains a central symbol of Catholic faith in the Uijeongbu region.
