YangjuMartyrs’ Shrine marks the place where five martyrs were killed during the 1866Byeongin Persecution, as recorded in the Journal ofMartyrdom (치명일기). After theestablishment of the Diocese of Uijeongbu in 2004, the site began beingdeveloped as a sacred place. The martyrs include Kim Yun-ho John (김윤호 요한)and Kwon Martha (권마르타), Kim Maria (김마리아), Park Seobang (박 서방)in 1866, and Hong Seong-won Augustine (홍성원 아우구스티노) in 1868; many of Hong’s familymembers were also martyred elsewhere.

The location was confirmed through testimonies, the land was purchased, and onMay 28, 2016, Bishop Peter Lee Ki-heon declared it an official shrine. Nearbycultural sites include Yangju Hyanggyo, the restored Yangju Government Office,and the performance grounds for the nationally designated Intangible CulturalHeritage Yangju Byeolsandae Nori.
