TheMartyrs Memorial Chapel within Naju Church is a tomb-style chapel built tohonor four martyrs: Peter Yi Chun-hwa, martyred in Naju during the GihaePersecution of 1839; and Paul Kang Yeong-won, Andrew Yu Chi-seong, and Paul YuMun-bo, who were martyred in 1872 during the Byeongin Persecution.

YiChun-hwa of Gongju was executed in Naju in 1839. Kang Yeong-won of Yongdam(Jeollabuk-do), Yu Chi-seong from Gyeongsang Province, and Yu Mun-bo fromJangseong (Jeollanam-do) were brought to Naju in 1871 near the end of thepersecutions ordered in 1866 by Heungseon Daewongun.

YuMun-bo died in prison under severe torture in 1872. Kang Yeong-won and YuChi-seong were executed by strangulation (baekji-sa형)in front of Muhakdang, the site of present-day Naju Elementary School.

WithinNaju Church, a memorial hall honors Archbishop Harold Henry—its first pastorand the fifth Bishop of Gwangju—and the restored original Korean motherhouse ofthe Caritas Sisters presents the early history of religious life in Korea.
