This area, a long deep mountain valley, served as a key routeduring the persecutions and became home to many hidden Christian villages. After the era of persecution, and following several relocations, the chapelsettled at its present location. In 1961 it was officially erected as a chapel;in 2018 the aging building was demolished and replaced with a new church andeducation center, which was later blessed. In August 2019 it was elevated tofull parish status, and in December 2019 the relics of its patron, BlessedPaul Oh Ban-ji, were enshrined.
The graves of the two martyrs—Barbara Park and hersister-in-law Barbara Yoon—are an important part of Baekgok’s heritage.
Barbara Park, a granddaughter-in-law of Yoon Haeng-yoon who fled Hongju duringthe persecutions, and her granddaughter Barbara Yoon were arrested together. They firmly professed their faith and were beaten to death. Their bodies werebrought by their families to the Seongjaegol valley behind Baeti and buriedthere. Their traditional family-recorded martyrdom date is October20, 1866.
Forgotten for many years, the graves were rediscovered in the early 1970s. Whendescendants visited Baeti in 1977 to relocate the graves to their family burialground in Pyeongtaek, the faithful of Baeti and Baekgok persuaded them to allowthe Church to continue honoring and caring for them. The remains were thentransferred to the Baekgok chapel grounds and the graves were carefullyrestored.
